HISTOVERY
Citadel Visitor Experience Renewal — Augmented Visit
The project involved a complete redesign of the visitor route within the fortress, aiming to enhance both heritage interpretation and overall visitor experience.
A new indoor and outdoor signage system was introduced to improve orientation and create visual coherence across the site. Durable materials and careful integration respect the existing architecture, while renewed content panels combine historical accuracy, educational clarity, and visual appeal.
A new architectural lighting scheme highlights the fortress’ historic volumes and textures, improving spatial readability and creating distinct atmospheres throughout the visitor route.
Several exhibition rooms were fully redesigned, including:
-
the Belgian Flag Room, featuring a dynamic flag sculpture,
-
the 1914 Room, dedicated to the assault on the bridge and the siege of Dinant,
-
the Pickets Room, presenting the structure of the former medieval bridge,
-
and the Treasury Room, where collection display was redesigned for improved clarity and immersion.
A new entrance space, the Vauban Room, now welcomes visitors with a custom reception desk, integrated HistoPad distribution rack, large introductory video screen, and scenographic elements immersing visitors into the site from arrival.
The project balances contemporary design with respect for heritage, combining scenography, lighting, and signage in dialogue with the historic architecture.
Visitor experience — HistoPad
Integrated throughout the visit, the HistoPad augmented system allows visitors to travel through time via 13 interactive “time gates,” presenting immersive 3D reconstructions of major moments in the citadel’s history, including the 1914 siege, soldiers’ daily life, and the Vauban period.
The experience evolved from a static visit to an interactive, immersive, and multilingual journey (8 languages), accessible to all audiences and families.
Historical accuracy
All digital content and 3D reconstructions were developed and validated in collaboration with a scientific committee to ensure historical and heritage accuracy.
Visitor flow & accessibility
Reorganized circulation routes and improved signage provide clearer orientation and smoother visitor movement across the entire site.
Heritage enhancement
Architectural interventions respect existing structures while introducing contemporary elements through lighting, furniture, and interactive devices.

Client: The Alamo, within the global Alamo Plan site renewal program
Mission: Full scenographic design and production
Exhibition surface: approx. 200 m²
Project overview
The Long Barrack, one of the few surviving structures from the 1836 Battle of the Alamo and the earlier Spanish mission, has been transformed into an immersive interpretation space as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the historic site.
The project aims to turn the building into an interactive visitor experience, integrating digital technologies and scenography to allow visitors to experience history within the authentic architectural setting rather than simply observe it.
The augmented attraction Surrounded! The Alamo Augmented Experience, located in the Long Barrack, forms part of this new visitor interpretation strategy.
Scenographic concept
The scenographic narrative highlights several key periods of the site’s history, from the Spanish mission era to the 1836 battle and modern conservation efforts.
Visitors move through a hybrid environment combining preserved historical architecture and immersive interpretation. Historic walls and volumes serve as backdrops for projections, interactive stations, and augmented-reality experiences that digitally reconstruct past events and environments.
The building itself becomes a central artifact, reinforcing its role as a place of memory.
Physical & digital integration
The project carefully preserves the historic structure while integrating exhibition furniture, display cases, multimedia devices, and digital installations within the existing architecture.
A hybrid system combines physical scenography with augmented content, allowing visitors to overlay historical reconstructions onto the present building through AR devices and interactive experiences.
Immersive atmosphere
Histovery collaborated on immersive digital content, while Stephen Arnold Music created soundscapes representing different historical periods, allowing visitors to experience the site through sound as well as visuals.
Battle sounds, voices, and environmental audio enhance immersion, transforming visitors into active participants in the story rather than passive observers.
Project values
The project balances several key objectives:
-
preservation of historical authenticity while improving accessibility,
-
strengthening the memorial dimension of the site,
-
enhancing educational understanding through immersive storytelling,
-
ensuring long-term heritage conservation,
-
and transforming the Long Barrack into a central experiential space within The Alamo.
Impact and outlook
The Long Barrack redevelopment significantly contributes to the transformation of The Alamo into an internationally recognized museum destination, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the site through immersive technologies integrated respectfully within historic architecture.
Future developments, including the new visitor center planned for completion around 2027, will further reinforce this transformation.
